Chapter Thirteen
THE NOTES ROLLED OFF my fingers and I sighed. The day had been long, and the night had been longer. When I finished my work for the day it was nearly nine p.m. and I wanted nothing more than to sit down and lose myself in the music. I hadn’t played in over a week, and my fingers were itching to try out the new song I’d written. My eyes closed, and I lost myself in the music of the night. All the tension melted away as I worked the pedal and tapped the keys in the way my mind had put them together. It was relaxing and soothing. When I finished, I would go home, take a shower, and fall into bed, where I would pray for a better day tomorrow. The last notes faded and I released the pedal, thankful no one was in the restaurant on a Tuesday night. I worried someday someone who knew my parents or my sister would be here and mention to them that I played, but it was worth the risk. There were days where I just had to play. I was considering buying a nice keyboard for my apartment. First, I had to figure out how to get it up the stairs and then how to hide it from prying eyes.
“That was beautiful, what do you call it?” a voice asked.
I jumped and my eyes flew open. Noah stood in front of me in his signature button-down shirt, which was blue tonight. He was freshly showered, a beer in his hand, and a sad smile on his face. I cleared my throat. “I call it The Spirit Within. It’s a dumb name. Whatever.” I waved my hand dismissively.
“Did you write it, Tabitha?” he asked, as if he had a right to know.
I stood and pushed the bench back. “Last week. I haven’t played it much, so I’m sure it sucked. It needs some work and a better title.” I moved to the side so I could scoot between him and the wall, but he read me and stepped the same way, pushing me into the corner where no one would notice us unless I yelled for help. It was dark and the shadows from the bar filled the space.
“If you like the title then you should use it,” he said, “but we aren’t talking about music here anymore. The spirit within is something you’ve always hidden from everyone. I convinced you to let your spirit shine and then I stomped on it. I’m sorry.”
My eyes darted for a way around him, but there wasn’t one, so I stared over his shoulder. “It’s fine. You don’t have to apologize for something you don’t think was wrong.”
He shook his head and sighed. “Will you at least let me explain? If you decide after I explain that you can’t forgive me, I’ll have to deal with it, but I want a chance to explain. I love you, sweetheart. It was wrong not to trust you, but.
